Getting started with JournalMind takes less than two minutes:
- Download the app from the App Store (iOS) or Google Play (Android).
- Create an account with your email address, or sign in with Apple/Google for one-tap setup.
- Set your preferences — choose your journaling goals, preferred reminder time, and notification settings.
- Write your first entry — tap the "+" button on the home screen, or respond to today's AI-generated prompt.
No journaling experience is required. If you're not sure what to write, our daily prompts will guide you. Just write freely — there are no rules here.
Every day, JournalMind generates a fresh reflection prompt tailored to your mood, recent entries, and journaling goals. You'll find today's prompt prominently on your home screen.
Prompts cover a wide range of themes — gratitude, personal growth, relationships, creativity, wellbeing, and more. If today's prompt doesn't resonate, tap the refresh icon to see a different one, or explore our curated prompt library (Premium feature) with 500+ questions organized by theme.
You can also write completely freely without a prompt by tapping "New Entry" on the home screen. Sometimes the best entries start with no plan at all.
A streak increments by 1 each day you write at least one journal entry. The day resets at midnight in your local time zone.
To help you maintain your streak:
- Daily reminders: Set a daily notification at your preferred time in Settings → Reminders.
- Streak shield: Premium users get one streak shield per month, protecting your streak if you miss a day.
- Milestone celebrations: The app celebrates streaks at 7, 14, 21, 30, 60, 90, and 365 days with special messages.
Even a single sentence counts — what matters is the habit of showing up, not the length of your entry.
Your privacy is fundamental to what JournalMind is. Here's how we protect your entries:
- Encryption at rest: All journal entries are encrypted using AES-256 encryption in our databases.
- Encryption in transit: Data moving between your device and our servers is protected by TLS 1.3.
- Limited access: JournalMind employees cannot read your journal entries. Support staff can only access account metadata (like your email and subscription status) when resolving an issue you've raised.
We also offer an optional biometric lock (Face ID / fingerprint) so that even if someone picks up your phone, they can't open the app. This is enforced by your device's secure enclave — we never receive your biometric data.
We never sell your data or share your entries with advertisers. See our Privacy Policy for complete details.
To enable the app lock:
- Open JournalMind and go to Settings → Privacy & Security.
- Toggle on App Lock.
- Choose your preferred method: Face ID, Touch ID, or a 6-digit PIN as a fallback.
Once enabled, you'll need to authenticate each time you open the app (or after a configurable timeout period). You can set the lock timeout to immediate, 1 minute, 5 minutes, or 30 minutes of inactivity.
Your biometric data is handled entirely by your device's operating system — JournalMind never has access to it.
The AI Coach is a conversational companion that reads your journal entries (with your permission) to offer personalized reflection, encouragement, and insights. It's accessible from the Coach tab in the app.
The AI Coach can:
- Ask thoughtful follow-up questions based on what you've written
- Identify emotional patterns across your entries over time
- Offer perspective on recurring themes or challenges you're exploring
- Suggest relevant journaling prompts or reflective exercises
- Generate a weekly "insight card" summarizing your emotional trends
The AI Coach is powered by advanced language models. It is designed for personal reflection and wellbeing support — it is not a substitute for professional mental health care. If you're experiencing a mental health crisis, please reach out to a qualified professional.
Free plan users get 5 AI Coach conversations per month. Premium users get unlimited access.
Every time you write an entry, you can optionally log your mood using the emoji mood picker (five levels from very low to joyful). The Insights screen then visualizes this data over time.
What you'll find in Insights:
- Mood trend chart: A line graph showing your mood across the past 7, 30, or 90 days.
- Writing frequency grid: A heatmap calendar showing how often you've journaled each day.
- Word cloud: The most common themes and words in your recent entries.
- AI weekly summary: A short paragraph written by AI highlighting patterns, improvements, and themes in your writing (Premium).
- Milestone tracker: Your streaks, total words written, and journaling anniversaries.
The more consistently you journal, the more meaningful your insights become over time.

Yes — your entries are yours, and you can export them at any time. Export is a Premium feature available in Settings → Export & Backup.
Export formats available:
- PDF: A beautifully formatted document with all your entries, dates, and mood tags.
- Plain text (.txt): Simple text format, one entry per file.
- JSON: Structured data format including all metadata, suitable for importing into other apps.
You can export all entries, entries from a specific date range, or entries with specific tags. Exports are delivered as a downloadable file to your email or saved to your device.
Free plan users can export up to their last 10 entries as plain text.
When you delete your account, here's what happens:
- Your account, journal entries, mood data, AI insights, and all personal information are permanently deleted from our servers within 30 days.
- Any active Premium subscription is cancelled at the time of deletion (no refund for the remaining period).
- Anonymized, aggregated usage data (which cannot be linked back to you) may be retained for product improvement purposes.
We strongly recommend exporting your entries before deleting your account, as this action is irreversible.
To delete your account: Settings → Account → Delete Account. You'll be asked to confirm, and optionally to provide feedback.
Yes — you can read and write journal entries offline. The app stores your entries locally on your device and syncs automatically with our servers when your connection is restored.
Features that require an internet connection:
- AI Coach conversations
- AI Insights generation
- Syncing entries across multiple devices
- Exporting entries to email
Your streak is calculated based on your local device time and synced when you reconnect — so writing offline still counts toward your streak.
Yes. JournalMind syncs automatically across all devices where you're signed in with the same account. Sign in on your iPhone, iPad, and Android tablet — your entries will appear on all of them.
Sync is near real-time when you have an internet connection. When you write on one device offline, changes sync automatically the next time that device connects.
You can sign in on up to 5 devices simultaneously. Premium users can manage their active devices in Settings → Account → Devices.
We're sorry you're experiencing issues. Here are the most effective troubleshooting steps:
- Force-quit and reopen the app — this resolves most temporary glitches.
- Check for updates — open the App Store or Google Play and update to the latest version of JournalMind.
- Restart your device — this clears memory and resolves many system-level issues.
- Check your internet connection — some features require connectivity.
- Reinstall the app — uninstall and reinstall JournalMind. Your data is saved to the cloud, so you won't lose anything (make sure you're signed in before reinstalling).
If the issue persists, please email us at support@journalmind.app with a description of the problem, your device model, and operating system version. Screenshots or screen recordings are very helpful.
